What do you need to do?  Task: You need to research, plan and write an essay about an aspect of UK society and culture. You are writing this informative piece for a student magazine called ‘International Society and Culture’ which is read by university students of all nationalities studying all over the world.   Choose ONE of these 24 essay topics:   Globalisation has caused many aspects of UK society and culture to change in recent decades. Comment on why there is a diverse range of opinions in the UK about the resulting impact of globalisation. Describe how multiculturalism is evident in UK society today. Comment on the role that the UK’s history has played in its current multicultural nature. Describe how social structures, social class, status, roles and institutions affect the nature of UK society and culture. Consider how key events of the twentieth century contributed to contemporary UK society. Describe the UK’s ‘mixed market’ economy and comment on ways in which the performance of the economy affects the lives of the UK population. To what extent has the UK made use made use of its renewable energy resources? Report on the measures the UK has taken to reduce its carbon emissions. How has the position of women in society changed since the Second World War? What impact has immigration had on British society since the 1950’s? To what extent do ideas of social class influence British people’s sense of identity? Discuss the development of Higher Education since the 1960’s and evaluate the impact of this development on UK culture and society. Discuss the changes in secondary education since 1945. Identify the benefits and limitations of the National Health Service then report on public perceptions of this institution. Report on the problems facing the welfare state due to Britain’s aging population. Discuss the relationship between Music and Fashion in the UK since 1950 and how this has given each generation its own identity. To what extent has “Retail Therapy” become a major leisure activity in the UK? How do British people spend their leisure time? To what extent is this influenced by gender and social background? Report on the constitutional and social roles played by the Royal Family in Britain. Report on the relationship between Government and the two Houses of Parliament. Report on the main economic problems faced by the United Kingdom in the second half of the twentieth Century. What measures has the UK government taken to reduce the nation’s debt and how effective are they likely to be? Analyse an area of science and innovation.  Which has Britain continued to make significant research and development in? In what ways has technology improved the lives of people in the United Kingdom over the last 20 years? What is the relationship between the British and European judicial systems? How are the rights of the individual safeguarded in British law?   You should include relevant examples to support your ideas and you should also refer to appropriate sources. You should write 900 – 1,100 words.

Guidance: You should make use of activities and content covered in class in weeks 1 – 5 to help you prepare for this task. Refer to guidance given by your teacher on how to research, plan and structure your essay, as well as guidance on how to include citations and manage referencing.   Please note: This is an individual assessment; you should not work with any other student to complete this task.  
Structure: Total word count : 1,000 Your essay should include the following: Introduction – briefly introduce the topic and state what the essay will cover Main body – address all the main points; organise the information into paragraphs, each with a distinct topic focus Conclusion – briefly summarise main ideas or argument
Theory and/or task resources required for the assessment: You should conduct some secondary research for this assignment to select relevant sources in addition to the resources listed for your module. In your essay, you should refer to a minimum of 3 relevant sources. Your teacher will advise on appropriate sources.  
Referencing style: You must include a Harvard style reference list at the end of your report.  A full bibliography is NOT required.
Expected word count: You are expected to write between 900 and 1,100 words.

How well you showed understanding of the ideas and evaluated them. 15% Organisation of ideas: How well you organise and link the ideas in your writing, making it easy to follow.15% Communication & academic expression: How clear your written language is and how appropriate the style is for an academic text.   PM/IYO   20% Task achievement: How fully you covered the task requirements.40% Knowledge and understanding: How well you selected relevant content and explained it. How well you showed understanding of the ideas and evaluated them. 10% Organisation of ideas: How well you organise and link the ideas in your writing, making it easy to follow.10% Communication & academic expression: How clear your written language is and how appropriate the style is for an academic text.20% Academic Integrity: How correctly you use academic conventions, e.g. citations, references, quotations and paraphrase; whether any data/facts you use are genuine, and how accurate they are.   You will receive a mark for each of these categories and your overall mark will be calculated as the weighted average of the four.  The overall mark will be reported as a percentage.
How will you get feedback? The assessed task will be marked. The marker will provide you with a mark for each criterion, an overall mark and written feedback.  You can use this feedback to guide your learning on this and other modules.
