1. Purpose of the Assessment

This formative assignment is designed to enable you to show a critical appraisal of key principles and concepts on which business, management and leadership practices are based. The assignment is concerned with examining and evaluating issues dealing with effective management and leadership. With-in this context we have covered the themes of role of role of management, motivational challenges, group dynamics, managing change, organisational culture and their impact on the central role of leadership. 

2. Assessment Task

2.1 Group Presentation Task (AS1), 15 minutes presentation, weighting 40 % of the mark (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO5)

‘As a manager, how do you create a “value added” environment in your organisation?’ Present your groups findings.

  • What are some of the critical success factors?
  • What are the likely barriers?
  • Why?
  • What are your recommendations? à Make a reasoned argument.

Note: Relate your investigation to the issues and themes covered in class

Guidelines:

  1. Remember you are telling a story
  2. Do have a beginning, middle and end.
  3. Introduce your purpose clearly.
  4. Have a clear conclusion and recommendation.
  5. You are free to make reasonable assumptions.
  6. You are presenting to the whole class. Make appropriate eye contact.
  7. There is no “right answer”. We are interested in your analysis, application and logical reasoning.
  8. Do link your ideas to issues and theories discussed in class.
  9. Do not overcomplicate your slides. Keep it simple and direct.
  10. Do not read the slides.
  11. Do discuss your approach and format with your tutor.

Style requirements:

Separate presentation skills guidance will be provided by the tutor in the class. It’s advisable to discuss your presentation format with the tutor.

2.2 Individual assignment (AS2), management report, weighting 60% of the mark (LO1, LO3, LO4)

Task:  

Research the topic of organisational and management Leadership and write a management report using the following framework.

  • What is meant by management and organisational leadership? Is there a difference between managers and leaders?
  • Why do individuals/ organisations find it difficult to understand the nature of effective leadership?
  • What are some of the best practices in the area of management leadership? Are there any specific theory/ies which helps you to answer this question?
  • What are the common barriers to effective leadership? How would you overcome them?
  • What are the take home messages from your investigation? Give your reasons.
  • What are your general and specific recommendations?
  • Do think like a manager and “not” a student.

Note: We will have in class briefing session. You are encouraged to discuss your approach with your tutor.

Word Limit: The assessment should be limited to 2,500 words (+/- 10%).

Style requirements: Except for the Titles and subtitles, you are not allowed to highlight text, which will be in Arial size 11, and without indentations. The main title is highlighted in size 16, and the subtitles are highlighted in size 14. The margins should be justified, not aligned to the left. Additionally, the space between lines should be single and the space between paragraphs should be double. The work will be in Management Report form and not the Essay form requiring and Introduction, the main body with subtitles and a conclusion. You must have an Executive Summary and an Content page.

3. Sources

It is expected that the Reference List of the reports will contain between five and ten sources. As a MINIMUM the Reference List should include at least ten refereed academic journal and academic books.

4. Specific Assessment Criteria

Assignment 1:

Highest marks will be awarded to students who present well-connected work in good English6. At this level of marking, the work will adhere to all the requirements, and will provide slides that are linked logically, are visible, attractive, leading to a sensible conclusion. Analytical comments by students are vital. Slides are well-referenced with a list of references reflecting the sources mentioned in the slides.

Weakening of these standards will result in lower grades: The degree of connectivity between slides and the level of analysis and cooperation will determine the decline of marking to very good and good.

40% + Evidence of reasonable effort in research using traditional and IT sources with a satisfactory selection of evidence but having substantial omissions leaving many areas for improvement. Lack of synthesis and shallow application with some evidence of analysis but little attempt to identify and relate theoretical concepts to practice. Lack of good presentation. Weak group preparation and poor link to theories. All areas dealt with superficially.

50% + Evidence of good effort in research and using traditional and IT sources with a satisfactory selection of evidence but having some omissions and leaving some scope for improvement. The report is well presented with some weaknesses in structure. Good level of analysis with some attempt to relate theoretical concepts to practical examples. Partial analysis of the theories and application. Fair evidence of group preparation. Fair use of referencing and a good level of analysis of the learning outcomes.

60% + Evidence some of the relevant information/skills accurately deployed.  Adequate grasp of theoretical, conceptual, analytical and practical elements.  Fair integration of theory, practice and information in relation to the objectives of the assessment. Some evidence of originality and creativity as appropriate to the subject.

70%+ Evidence of a substantial level of research using traditional and IT sources with a clear and relevant draft covering all of the learning outcomes in the brief. Very good level of content and analysis relating theoretical concepts to practice. Some evidence of originality in the approach to the assignment. Key elements of the economic/business environment clearly identified and analysed. Well presented with accurate referencing. Good group work.

85% + Professionally presented work, presented with appropriate style and structure. Extensive evidence of relevant research using traditional and IT sources with an appropriate selection of evidence and constructed into a clear and relevant synthesis covering all the items requested in the brief. Excellent level of content, analysis and evaluation relating theoretical concepts to practical examples. Excellent group work.

Each key element of the brief clearly identified and analysed. Evidence of originality in the approach to the work.

Assignment 2:

40% + Evidence of reasonable effort in research using traditional and IT sources with a satisfactory selection of evidence but having substantial omissions leaving many areas for improvement. Lack of synthesis and shallow application with some evidence of analysis but little attempt to identify and relate theoretical concepts to practice. Lack of good presentation. Poor referencing generally. All areas dealt with superficially.

50% + Evidence of good effort in research and using traditional and IT sources with a satisfactory selection of evidence but having some omissions and leaving some scope for improvement. The assignment is well presented with some weaknesses in structure. Good level of analysis with some attempt to relate theoretical concepts to practical examples. Partial analysis of the economic/business environment and application. Fair use of referencing and a good level of analysis of the learning outcomes.

5.Assessment Submission

Your assignment must be word processed and presented in a report format with simple sub-headings. The word count should be as specified in the assignment above±10% (tables, diagrams and appendices are excluded from the count). 

The Assignment report should have a Front Sheet showing your name, your student number, the module name, the module number, the assignment title, the module tutor’s name, the date and the word count. 

All assignments will be submitted, graded and fed-back electronically via TURNITIN. Several submissions will be permitted before the hand-in date in order to enable you to refine the content in your report.
