Assessment 2 Details

Task

In this assessment, you will be undertaking a comprehensive research on any small business in your local area. You are required to critically analyse and evaluate different aspects of the business and to provide recommendations for the business based on your analysis of the gaps and growth potentials (as detailed below).

You will be presenting your analysis in a Padlet Portfolio which will contain both text and short audio/video presentations (see details below). Once you complete your analysis, you will hold an Investor Meeting with 2-3 other students to discuss and decide whether the company is worth investing in. You will then reflect on this meeting in the final task of this Portfolio.

Your Padlet Portfolio needs to contain the following section and address the following tasks:

Introduction

Introduce your selected small business with the following key information:

  • Name of business

1 The grade is provisional until confirmed by the relevant assessment board(s). Your work will be marked in grades rather than percentages. This is considered to deliver the most accurate and fair outcomes for students. Each assessment that you undertake will be assessed using the common grading system. Information about the grading system can be found in your Student Handbook, Section 13.

The Grade Criteria can be found in Appendix C of your Student Handbook.

  • When/Where was the business established?
  • What products/services does the business offer (products range)?
  • Which industry does the business operate in?
  • Who are the owners of the business?

Your response to this task can take a form of one of the following:

  • 200 words or
    • a 2-minute audio/video presentation or
    • 100 words and 1-minute audio/video presentation

Small Business criteria

  • Justify why your selected business is categorised as a small business in the UK.
  • Identify the characteristics that make your selected small business successful.

Your response to this task can take a form of one of the following:

  • 300 words or
    • a 3-minute audio/video presentation or
    • 150 words and 1.5-minute audio/video presentation

Gaps and growth potential analysis

Drawing upon academic literature, analyse any four of the following aspects of your chosen small business:

  • Small business ownership
  • Financial planning
  • Marketing a small business
  • Operations management
  • Leadership and teams
  • Growth strategies
  • Business law and regulatory environment

In your response, identify any gaps and growth potentials in each of the four areas. Your response to this task needs to take a form of 1,200 words and 5 min audio/video.

Recommendations

  • Provide recommendations based on the gaps and growth potentials identified in Task 3.
  • Demonstrate how will the company benefit from your recommendations.

Your response to this task can take a form of one of the following:

  • 400 words or
    • a 4-minute audio/video presentation or
    • 200 words and 2-minute audio/video presentation

Conclusion

  • Produce a sound conclusion that highlights the main points covered in the work Your response to this task can take a form of one of the following:

Peer reflection

  • Upon completion of tasks 1-5, form a peer review group with 2-3 other students imagining that they are businesspeople interested in investing into the small business that you have been analysing.
  • All members of the group should share their Padlets with each other by Week 11 of the term.
  • In Week 12 workshop, you will hold Investor Meetings (i.e. group discussions) to answer the following questions:
  • Should we invest in this small business?
    • If yes, what would be our offer and what would be our conditions?
    • If no, why?

Your group will need to come to a unanimous decision so be prepared to negotiate.

  • Following your peer review meeting with your classmate, reflect on the experience of working in your group and write 200 words, or record a 2-minute audio/video presentation, describing the team dynamics and reflecting on this experience.
  • Add your reflection to your Padlet before submitting your work.

Additional Guidance

  • Your portfolio should be presented in Padlet (https://en-gb.padlet.com/). Your padlet based work could include captions, images, screenshots, slides & video/voice-over etc.
  • The total word count for this task is 3,000 words equivalent, which consist of 1,500 words of written work and 10 minutes audio/video presentation (equivalent to 1,500 words).
  • Additional guidance on using Padlet and submitting your work will be available on Canvas.
  • Harvard referencing system must be used throughout for your citations and reference list.

Submission requirements

You must submit your assignment by using the Turnitin gateway in the module’s Canvas site.

Please Note: When you submit you will be asked to confirm you have referred to the Submission Checklist (see Appendix 1) and the act of submitting your work electronically will be taken as an acceptance of the Declaration of Authorship (see Appendix 2).

Word Limits

All written assignments include clear guidance on the maximum amount that should be written in order to address the requirements of the assessment task (a ‘word limit’).

If the submission exceeds the word limit by more than 10%, the submission will only be marked up to and including the additional 10%. Anything over this will not be included in the final grade for the item of assessment.
