The assignments
- There are two assignments, each worth 50% of the module marks.
- Both are focused on an imaginary company – We Are Mechanix Ltd. – and its intention to introduce an Environmental Management System.
- The description of the company is provided in:

The virtual company
- We Are Mechanix Ltd provides vehicle servicing for local car owners
- Small family-run European business.
- Want to register their business as an approved Ford Service CentreEmployees including Manager, 5 vehicle technicians etc.
- Services on average 5 cars per day. Operates a 6-day week (Monday to Saturday), all year round.
- Want to register as an approved Ford Service Centre – Requirements: manage environmental impacts.
- Environmental activities are currently focused on the vehicle servicing processes.
- An initial environmental assessment has been done with the aim of introducing an EMS.
- Full details are given in Unit 9 – Company Description and Unit 9 – Initial Environmental Assessment.
- All information is given for a reason – use it!
Data gathered & issues to consider
Results from the initial environmental assessment of the vehicle servicing process:
- Waste inventory: licensed contractors for hazardous & non-hazardous wastes
- Emissions to air: Carbon Monoxide & Carbon Dioxide
- Emissions to water: Wastewater, Chemical Oxygen Demand & Biological Oxygen DemandOther resource use: water, electricity, gas etc.

Assignment 1 – Overview
- Based on the Company Description and Initial Environmental Assessment, concentrating mainly on the vehicle servicing processes.
- Write a report for the company that describes a potential approach to planning the implementation of an EMS.
- Your report MUST include the following:
- An explanation of the environmental and business benefits of implementing an EMS.
- A table, broken down by activity showing the company’s environmental aspects and their associated environmental impacts.
- An assessment of which aspects are significant.
- A detailed Regulatory Compliance Register based on UK law.
- Maximum 1500 words. 50% of the module marks.
Assignment 1 – Company overview & business benefits
- Read all the information contained in the Initial Environmental Assessment and the Assignment briefing document. All resources can be found under Unit 9 >> Assignments
- Prepare a report using Assignment 1 template, provided under Unit 9 >> Assignments
- In the Introduction section, don’t just repeat the text from the assignment brief.
- Consider your audience. This report is for the owner-manager. Think about what they need to know about implementing an EMS
- Explain the business benefits of implementing an EMS.
- Persuade the owner-manager to invest (The company will have other competing considerations)
- Benefits should be specific to the virtual company, otherwise they are not persuasive.
- Concise and focused
Assignment 1 – Aspects & Impacts
Think about:
- On Day 1 of this course, Aspects and Impacts were discussed in detail together with ways in which they can be ranked.
- Make a list of all the company’s environmental aspects at each stage of the process. Then consider what the environmental impacts of this will be.
- Use ONE of the processes described on Day 1 to rank or colour code these according to significance.
- This information should be laid out in a table.
- For the format of each section, refer to the Assignment 1 template (Unit 9 >> Assignments)
Assignment 1 – Register of regulatory compliance
Think about:
- On Day 1 of this course the Register of Regulatory Compliance was discussed in detail.
- Details of what should be included were given in that lecture.
- Do some background research to identify what UK/EU regulations will apply to this company.
- Looking at the examples given on Day 1, create a register for the company.
- This information should be laid out in a table.
- The format of the table, refer to Assignment 1 template (Unit 9 >> Assignments)
Assignment 1 – Submit a draft for feedback
- You have the opportunity to submit a short draft of your assignment for feedback.
- Drafts should be no more than 500 words.
- In each section write some bullet points summarising what you plan to write.
- For each table, complete one row of the table.
- Drafts should be submitted via Canvas by 4pm on 8th March
- Late submissions will not receive feedback
Assignment 2 – Overview
- Based on the Company scenario concentrating mainly on the vehicle servicing process, write a report for the company that describes a potential implementation and monitoring phase of an EMS.
Your report MUST include the following:
- An appropriate set of environmental objectives for the company.
- An action plan showing how the company will achieve these environmental objectives.
- A proposed measuring and monitoring plan.
- A brief reporting and communication plan for the company.
- Maximum 1500 words. 50% of the module marks.
Assignment 2 – Overview
- Read all the information contained in the Initial Environmental Assessment and the
Assignment briefing document. All resources can be found under Unit 9 >> Assignments
- Prepare a report using Assignment 2 template, provided under Unit 9 >> Assignments
- Introduction: Describe the purpose of the report, its scope, boundaries and any limitations of the report. Do not just repeat information given in the assignment brief.
- Environmental Objectives: Write a set of SMART environmental objectives based on aspects that you identified in assignment 1.
Assignment 2 – Objectives & Targets
- Action Plan: Explains the steps that you would advise We Are Mechanix Ltd to take in order to achieve the environmental objectives that you set. Refer to Table 1 from Assignment 2 template (Unit 9 >> Assignments) for the format.
- Measuring and monitoring regime: Describe what you will measure and what you will monitor in order to determine whether or not environmental objectives have been achieved. Refer to Table 2 from Assignment 2 template for the format.
- Training and Communication plan: Describe who needs to be communicated with, what do you need to communicate to them, how frequently and who will do the communications. Refer to Table 3 from Assignment 2 template for the format.
Assignment 2 – Submit a draft for feedback
- You have the opportunity to submit a short draft of your assignment for feedback.
- Drafts should be no more than 500 words.
- In each section write some bullet points summarising what you plan to write.
- For each table, complete one row of the table.
- Drafts should be submitted via Canvas by 4pm on 31st March
- Late submissions will not receive feedback
Environmental Management Systems Implementation
For both assignments:
- Your assignments must be based on the fictional company We Are Mechanix Ltd.
- You base your assignments on the information provided to you in the assessment briefing document and in the Initial Environmental Assessment (Unit 9 >> Assignments)
- Templates have been provided to help you to complete Assignments 1 and 2. The templates
can be found under Unit 9 >> Assignments
- You should cover each section of the template provided. You will be scored on each section of the report.
For both assignments:
- You must remove the instructions from the template. The template is only a guide, you are encouraged to add extras e.g. text, diagrams etc.
- You will need to do your own additional research around the subject in order to fully answer this assignment.
- You must cite all text references and include a correctly-formatted reference list at the end of your work.
- You MUST NOT COPY any contents from the case study and relevant materials. Contents must be paraphrased and referenced properly.
- You are encouraged to check your work on the Turnitin Similarity Checker before the final submission. ONE Submission only per assignment.
