Task One
In this assignment you must write a report discussing the different contexts in which communication can happen in health and social care settings. You must include:
- Group Context
- One-to-One context
When writing about each of the about you must consider how in each context you can communicate either formally or informally. Also, you must write about who communication can occur between, for example between colleagues or between practitioners and service users.
You must include 3 case studies demonstrating one-to-one communication and group communication.
Task 2
Create a booklet explaining the different forms of communication. You must cover each of the following forms of communication:
- Computerized
- Written
- Oral
- Special Methods (e.g. Makaton, British Sign Language, Braille)
After explaining each type of communication, describe a scenario during which each form of communication would be used. Use case studies from the textbooks to help form your scenarios.

Describe types of interpersonal interaction. Interpersonal interaction encompasses any type of interaction that occurs between two or more people. In this task, explain the following types of interpersonal interactions using an example to help support your answer:

Task One
In this assignment you must create a PowerPoint which discusses the theories of communication. In your PowerPoint you must cover:
- Argyle’s Communication Cycle
- Tuckman’s Stages of group Interaction
- SOLER
You must include a description of each theory and a case study example in a health and social care setting showing the breakdown of each theory. You can include more details in the notes section of the presentation to avoid clutter on the slides.
You will present a section of your presentation to a group of GCSE students in an attempt to teach them how the theories apply to health and social care.
Task 2
Write a report assessing the usefulness of Argyle and Tuckman’s theories of communication within health and social care environments. Your report should have 5 parts. These include:
- Introduction to how theories could either promote or inhibit effective communication.
- How could Argyle’s Communication Cycle promote or inhibit effective communication?
- 2 case studies demonstrating Argyle’s Communication Cycle and an explanation of how in each case study the theory either promoted or inhibited effective communication.

Task 3
Write a report analysing how cultural variations can influence communication. Introduce how cultural beliefs can affect communication and how these beliefs can affect conduct while communicating.
Relate these variations to health and social care settings and explain how these differences could have an effect on how care workers would adapt how they communicate with people of different cultural backgrounds. Create 3 case studies demonstrating cultural variation in health and social care settings and explain the effect cultural variation has had on communication in each case study.
Unit 1 Communication in Health and Social Care – Factors Positively and Negatively Influencing Communication
Criteria Covered:
P3 Explain factors that may influence communication and interpersonal interactions in health and social care environments
Task 1
Write a report explaining the different factors which may positively and negatively influence communication. Be sure to look at each factor from both a positive and negative viewpoint if possible. When writing about each factor you must:
- Describe the factor
- Explain its influence on communication
- Give a case study example
- Provide a brief overview of how to overcome this barrier
This report will be broken down into two different sections. The first will look at the environment and how components of an environment could influence communication. When writing about environments start by first introducing what role an environment can play in communicating and then go on to explain how 3 specific factors from the list below can affect communication.

Task 1
Discuss possible strategies for overcoming barriers in Communication and Interpersonal Interaction such as;

Explain how a range of ‘Aids to Communication’ can be used to overcome Barriers to Communication in Health and Social care Settings
Choose 3 Human Aids and 3 Technological Aids
Human – Advocates, Interpreters, Translators, Signers
Technological – Hearing Aids, Text Phones, Minicom, Voice Activated Software, Relay systems, Loop Systems.
For each of the Aids selected, illustrate you answer with a Case Study to show application to Health and Social Care.
