Avoid following companies:

Select two organisations whose global supply/ value management issues are of interest to you and compose an analytical report. Ensure that you are able to gather relevant information to complete this task.  The organization you choose must be different to those examined in the weekly sessions (e.g. Avoiding Apple, Samsung, Ikea, Toyota, KFC, Starbucks, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s etc.). Choosing these prohibited companies will adversely affect your grade.

The assessment will now be sectioned into two parts;

Supply Chain Management (2000 words)

In your analyses, you must discuss in detail these organisations have effectively (or ineffectively) structured their supply chain to overcome strategic and operational issues within the organisations.

Supply Chain Management

You may consider topics such as planning and control, organisational structures, lean supply chain, globalisation, sustainability or anything other topics you consider relevant in the context of the case organisations in relation to what is covered in the weekly lectures.

As a guide, you may wish to follow the following format:

  • State which global organisations you have chosen for your report and provide a justification and some background information on each company.
  • With the aid of a diagram, outline and discuss the supply chain strategies, supplier relationships, and the relationship between the operational processes for each organisation.
  • Identify and describe the supply chain/ operational issues faced by the chosen companies, especially in a global context.
  • Identify and critically analyse how each company uses their strategy. Are they effective or ineffective at overcoming supply chain issues? Compare/ Contrast.

Project Management (2000 words)

Before reading the instructions for the second part of your assessment, watch this video.

Construct and justify a project plan that aims to improve the supply chain issues you have discussed in the previous section. You are required to identify, scope, and plan a project for their case organisations using relevant project management methods.

You may wish to follow the following format:

  • Proffer recommendations on how the organisations could mitigate the supply issues you have discussed using academic literature
  • Discuss the project objectives and the impact on the supply chain of the organisations.
  • Describe the elements of your project processes and plan (using relevant project management tools or frameworks discussed in the lectures).
  • Evaluate the challenges in implementing the project plan.
  • Critique how the project outcomes can be evaluated

References: Must be in Harvard style. You should use the Cite-me-right (Links to an external site.) referencing convention.

Items to include:

  • You must clearly state which two organisations you will be using and be clear throughout your work which one you are referring to in your discussion
  • You must include a diagram illustrating the global supply chain for both organisations
  • You must critically apply supply chain management techniques in a global context to your case organisations
  • Using project management methods, you must construct and justify a project that aims to remedy supply chain issues faced by both global organisations.
  • All work must be submitted in the correct format (MS Word, no PDFs)
  • All work must be submitted online through CANVAS
  • You must refer to a range of academic journals and reference correctly throughout

 References should be in the Harvard referencing style.

Complete the activity below. Track the supply chain for KFC (20 Minutes Task)

  1. What raw materials does KFC need?
  2. How many tiers of suppliers can you identify?
  3. Who supplies what? 
  4. What is KFC’s sourcing strategy? (Centralised or decentralised)
  5. Were you able to identify the logistics company working with KFC?
  6. What relationships do you think KFC facilitates with its suppliers and the logistics company?
  7. What process type does KFC use? (Project, Jobbing, Batch, Mass, or Continuous?)
  8. How does KFC sell and distribute its final product to its final consumer?
  9. Does KFC apply any form of vertical integrations?
  10. What is KFC’s supply chain performance objective? (Cost, Quality, Speed, Dependability or Flexibility?)

Answer as many questions as you can in the stipulated time and return to the session to give feedback. (20 mins)

  1. Planning and controlling of operations (How does the case organisation reconcile supply to demand?; How does the case organisation respond to demand?)

    1. Evidence of an understanding of the concept – define lean management in the context of supply chains using journal articles.
    2. Apply this concept to the case organisation. Are there any lean operations or supply chain activities that the case organisation facilitates? Why? What supply chain performance are they trying to achieve? (Link your discussion to relevant research – Journal articles would be useful here)
    3. Is it effective or not?
    4. What issues have you identified in the case organisation’s supply chain that lean management could rectify?

Downstream Supply Chain

  1. Retailers and relationship with case organisation

  2. The inseparability of the downstream and operations (e.g. services)

With the way the supply chain is structured, what is (or should be) the case organisation’s overall supply chain performance objective? Are they achieving this well? Critique for good and bad practices.
