LO1 Understand the appeal, motivational factors and variables behind travel decisions

In this section, the learners acquire knowledge about interests, motivational factors and variables that are responsible for carrying out better decision in the tourism industry. The interests such as attractiveness, novelty, frequency, convenience, facilities, accessibility and prior experiences of the tourists are identified by the management of the tourism industry for determining better decisions. Moreover, motivational factors such as the purpose of the trip such as short break business, annual holiday, nature of the journey, the potential for enjoyment. Different variables and travel services are also considered while taking decisions for the industry.

LO2 Understand the management of passenger systems and nodes

This section helps in the understanding of the ways of managing passenger systems and nodes. For this, passenger systems including planning issues, financial aspects, organisational matters, monitoring, promotions and improvements are to be considered. Additionally, nodes such as income flows, outgoing flows, terminal facilities, peripherals and emergency procedures are to be taken into account.

LO3 Understand the factors of competition between transport operators

This section helps the learners to understand the factors responsible for competition between different transport operators. These include certain regulations that the operators need to comply with such regulations of the road, government policies and enforcement and interventions. Additionally, services related issues are also responsible for the competition that includes business services, check-in times and quality and market segmentation. Moreover, several organisational factors are also there that segregates different operators with each other.

LO4 Understand the effects of developments and issues on transport operations

This section focuses on the issues in transport operations and the effects of development. There are several developmental effects such as budget airlines, alliances, mergers, evolution and diversity of modes of transport and new destinations. Apart from this, the issues consist of effects of globalisation, overcrowding, subsidies, fluctuations in fuel cost, congestion and taxation and so on. This further leads to threats to the operators such as changing customers’ expectations, SARS, deep vein thrombosis, foot and mouth that causes environmental pressure and occurrences.
